Osun State University (UNIOSUN) hosted the fifth edition of the highly anticipated International Sustainable Development Dialogue (ISDD) from June 18 to 20, 2025. Organized by the university’s Global Affairs and Sustainable Development Institute (GASDI), the conference convened leading experts, researchers, policymakers, and practitioners from around the world to address the theme: “Sustainable Development in the Age of Crises: Humanities, Science and a More Equitable World.”

As the world grapples with multifaceted challenges ranging from climate change and economic instability to public health emergencies and political inflammations, the need for sustainable solutions has never been more pressing. The ISDD 2025 served as a crucial platform for interdisciplinary dialogue, fostering a holistic understanding of sustainable development issues, and integrating insights from the humanities, sciences, and indigenous knowledge systems.

GASDI was established by UNIOSUN with a mandate to address sustainable development issues uniquely and effectively through capacity development and research. GASDI aims to be a center of excellence in postgraduate teaching and research in all areas of sustainable development, offering Master’s and Ph.D. programs in fields such as Sustainable Development Practice, Peace and Conflict Studies, Climate and Society, Migration Studies, and Indigenous Knowledge and Heritage Studies.

“We are living in an era defined by overlapping crises, and it is more important than ever to bring together diverse perspectives and co-create pathways towards a more sustainable and equitable future,” said Prof. Clement O. Adebooye, the Vice Chancellor of UNIOSUN. “This dialogue will not only highlight the urgent need for action but also showcase innovative approaches that bridge the gap between scientific advancements and humanistic understanding to create lasting impact.”

“Some of our guests from around the world have arrived. We started our pre-conference masterclass today with engaging discussions about Brazilian favelas (Brazilian neighbourhoods where the residents have developed systems to cater for themselves, following neglect by government; also called slums),” said Prof. John Agbonifo, the Director at GASDI.

The conference featured keynote addresses, plenary sessions, and parallel thematic discussions, exploring topics such as: Cosmopolitics of Osun, Sustainable Development, Renewable Energy, Landscape Architecture, and African Secondary Cities.

Participants engaged in robust discussions aimed at developing actionable strategies and fostering collaborations that transcend disciplinary boundaries and geographical borders.
